Created in 1986, this is one of the leading “quality” newspapers in the British press. Its pro-European stance sets it apart from its rivals. Big-name staffers include special correspondent Robert Fisk, known for his vehement condemnation of Anglo-American policy in the Middle East, and commentator Dominic Lawson, one-time government minister under Margaret Thatcher.

Indeed, since its 1980s debut in the Thatcher era, when a team of journalists dared to start up a daily that wouldn’t be affiliated with either of the two main current of British political thought, The Independent has distinguished itself by its refreshing style and open-minded approach.  Though highly regarded, The Independent is the “quality” national daily with the smallest circulation.

Its no-frills website is simple, straightforward and legible and affords rapid access to the articles. But it lacks originality – which is slightly disappointing for an otherwise innovative newspaper that has been known to nonplus its readers on many an occasion.
