With shouts of "garbage queers" and "Slovakia is ours," the group of 80 extremists launched a rain of eggs, stones and tear gas before physically attacking gay marchers and other demonstrators who attempted to defend them. The daily is highly critical of the role of police "who failed to provide sufficient protection for the marchers," several of whom were injured. It also blames "Interior Minister Kaliňák who has taken advantage of his few remaining days in office to discredit himself once again" in the run-up to general elections to be held on 12 June.
(News in brief)

The Strasbourg court has ruled in favour of a Szczecin resident who for ten years fought for the right to rent the council flat he had shared with his now deceased partner. Polish courts decided that the law does not recognise same-sex partnerships and that heredity only refers to heterosexual couples. The ECHR rejected the judges’ claims about the necessity to defend the “traditional family”, and ruled that different treatment of homosexuals and heterosexuals was unfounded. It is "the first verdict which openly talks about discriminating against homosexuality in Poland,” says the Warsaw daily, which notes that Polish law fails even to mention homosexual rights. Meanwhile, Corriere della Sera reports that the Italian government was pleased to learn that the ECHR has granted Italy’s appeal against the 2009 ruling which bans crucifixes in state-run schools.
(News in brief)

Until the Catholics stepped in. The text, incorporating attacks on gays to existing laws on racially motivated violence was rejected on October 13. Roman daily La Repubblica explains that it was deemed unconstitutional because it amounted to positive discrimination. The opposition Democratic party (PD) has threatened to expel Catholic MP Paola Binetti, who voted alongside the majority against the law. In an interview with La Stampa, Binetti defended herself and asked if such a law was really needed.

According to La Repubblica, the answer is yes. Homophobic attacks in Italy are on the rise: 54 reported since January. The rejection of the homophobia law is therefore "good news for those who, in an ever more ferocious country, roam the night like hunting dogs, searching for a prey to insult, hit, trample upon", comments veteran feminist columnist Miriam Mafai.
(News in brief)

Penalties for “gay agitation” would apply to both individuals and organisations. The opposition conservative and eurosceptic party Order and Justice (TiT) is agitating for a minimum fine set at €325, the maximum €1,750. A couple of months ago the Lithuanian right sought to push through parliament a bill that equated homosexuality with zoophilia and necrophilia, providing not only fines but also prison sentences for speaking favourably about gay tendencies.

The left and the country’s gay rights organisations are shocked by the passing of these anti-gay regulations. “This is an absurdity and a shame,” said Marija Pavilioniene, deputy for the social-democratic party Ausrine. In the meantime, the conservatives have been explaining that the purpose of these regulations. According to one of the bill’s originators, Petras Grazulis, a well known “tribune of the people”, this is all “to prevent these persons from forcing themselves on others and aggressively demonstrating their lifestyle.” Petras Luomanas from the ruling Homeland Union echoed Gazulis – ‘Because of propaganda, young people are beginning to uncritically accept the following cliché: a homosexual is a European and a progressive, whereas the heterosexual is a redneck and an ignoramus.”
(News in brief)
