    In the second round of municipal elections, comedian Beppe Grillo's 5 Star movement won its first town hall in Parma, while right-wing parties suffered stinging defeats. The Democratic Party (left) won most of Italy's thousand municipalities on a turn-out of just over 50%.

    Europe threatened with “lost generation”

    According to Eurostat, 5,516,000 Europeans under 25 did not work in March 2012 (accounting for 22.6% of all unemployed in Europe). This is 303,000 more than in March 2011. In 2012, 12.7% of under 25's will be unemployed. The International Labour Organization (OIL) has evoked "the birth of a lost generation."

    EU divisions deepen over eurobonds ahead of summit

    Germany and France clashed ahead of tomorrow’s EU summit as their divisions deepened over the hotly contested question of jointly issued eurobonds. Hours after Berlin rejected French demands to put eurobonds on the summit agenda, French finance minister Pierre Moscovici reiterated that the proposal was a “strong idea” and would be on the table in Brussels.
