Between 1956 and 1990, Népszabadság ("The People's Freedom") was the mouthpiece of the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party (HSWP). In the wake of the collapse of communism and a takeover by Bertelsmann, it built a reputation for quality and authoritative news-gathering, while retaining strong links with the Hungarian Socialist  Party, the successor to the HSWP. Currently defined by a "left-wing liberal" editorial line, the daily is owned by the Swiss-based publisher Ringier AG.
