Founded in 1950, Milliyet ("Nationality") is one of Turkey's best regarded daily newspapers. Owned by the powerful Dogan Medya group, its centrist political line has sometimes led to reprisals from right wing factions in the country. In 1979, its editor in chief was assassinated by Ali Agca, the perpetrator of a subsequent murder attempt on Jean Paul II.
