The austerity measures demanded by the Troika of all European states are designed to ensure that bankers get paid in full whilst destroying the living standards of the vast majority of ordinary people in the process. The measures fail to restore economic growth and employment, and instead ensure the recession becomes a depression. Greece should not honour the repayment of the public sector debts run up with banks, insurance companies and other financials, because it is crippling the country’s ability to get out of a deep economic slump by lowering economic growth and hence living standards for a generation. The biggest winners from joining the euro were Greek capitalists. The benefits of increased economic growth went to them disproportionately. And Greek capitalism will now benefit most from the Troika’s austerity and EU bailout. I vote for the man in the street. Default. Only then can one move forward and out of the shackles.

When Greece defaults and the banks and other financial institutions, including the ECB, take their losses, who do you expect to lend to the government, businesses and the people4 of Greece? There will be no foreign investment and no way to to obtain imports like food, oil, etc. And the money from any exports will not flow back to Greece since it will be held to pay creditors. Is this the way to improve the conditions of the Greek people? While default is an option, there is nowhere for the Greek Government to file Bankruptcy so the debt would exist and their creditors will keep trying to collect. This assures that a depression will occur in Greece. And likely across Europe as well

La grèce est déjà en faillite. Il est impossible de sortir de sa situation économique en justifiant seulement et simplement d'économies. Quand vous n'avez plus rien à économiser, il ne vous reste plus qu'à brader vos acquis. La grèce doit se déclarer en faillite pour pouvoir prendre un peu d'air. L'europe ne se conduit que d'une seule façon: celle d'un huissier. Quand une banque prête sans garantie, sans contrôle et sans prudence, alors elle doit aussi assumer ses responsabilité. La grèce se fait dépecer, devant tout le monde, et personne ne réagit en se disant: cela ne peut nous arriver à nous.. Les grecs sont des tricheurs et des menteurs. Mais cela ne suffit pas, après la Grèce, le Portugal, l’Irlande, l’Italie.. Sommes nous tous des menteurs?? Car face aux menteurs, se trouvent les voleurs!!!

Hi Tricky! Wie stellt du dir das vor? Wenn Griechenland seine Schulden nicht bedient, dann erklärt es seine Insolvenz. Es erhält dann keine weiteren Kredite mehr, jedenfalls nicht von privaten Investoren. Auch wenn Griechenland alle Altschulden erlassen werden, ist es nicht in der Lage, seinen Haushalt mit eigenen Einnahmen auszugleichen. Würde es von den Geberländern keine weiteren Kredite erhalten, dann würde der Lebensstandard in Griechenland noch stärker einbrechen. Die Griechen erwarten, dass andere Nationen ihren Lebensstandard garantieren. Außerdem muss man bei den Kreditgebern unterscheiden zwischen soliden Finanzinstituten, die das Geld ihrer Anleger zu einem moderaten Zins dem griechischen Staat zur Verfügung gestellt haben, und den Profiteuren, die diese Krise gnadenlos zu ihrem Vorteil nutzen.

Hi aditec. I see what you are saying but Greece cannot pay its debt back. It is impossible, more and more austerity measures damages the economy even more and makes the likelihood of debt repayment less likely. The tipping point has long been reached and exceeded. It is hopeless. You are right to say that Greece is still running a budget deficit even after writing off all the debt and I think some measure of EU support would be required. Of course that support should be dependent on structural reform.

@ aditec : I think you should say "the Greek elite" or "the Greek capitalists" instead of just "the Greeks", 'cause I don't think that the people who abandon their new-born children on the streets because they can't feed them have a great "standard of living" to be funded by our money.

More than the only question of the Greek bankrupt, I'm afraid that the Greek people is reaching the breaking point which could affect the entire Europe: the relationship between the Northern and Southern countries is going to be broken, which could lead to the breakage of the EU, and not only of the Euro or the european economy (including the German economy).

For sure, austerity is essential for all the countries which can support it. However, prescribe more and more bloodletting to a dying man will just kill him quicker. I thought that we made some progress since the Middle Age, and not only in medicine. Maybe it is time to try another therapy, a softer one which could help Greece to really recover.

Hi Nebehr! Wenn ich die Griechen oder Griechenland sage, dann meine ich natürlich nicht jeden einzelnen griechischen Menschen. Ich meine diejenigen, die das griechische System zu verantworten und die vom griechischen System profitiert haben. Hauptverantwortung tragen die politische und wirtschaftliche Elite. Aber auch die unzähligen Griechen, die Renten für längst verstorbene Angehörige kassieren, die Steuerzahlungen verweigern, die als Beamte und Ärzte Bestechungsgelder (fakelaki) fordern, die als staatliche Angestellte unangemessene und im übrigen Europa unübliche Zulagen erstreiken, denen durch Vetternwirtschaft Jobs in der Administration vermittel werden, die keine Funktion haben... all diese Menschen tragen zum Erhalt eines System aus Korruption und Vetternwirtschaft bei und blockieren damit die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung ihres Landes.

Hi Jeleg! Du solltest auch klar sagen, wer die immer teurer werdende Medizin für die Dauerpatienten zahlen soll – für Patienten, die ihren Zustand auch größtenteils selbst zu verantworten haben. Wie ich schon mehrfach gesagt habe: Blut spenden ist gut, aber wenn der Blutspender dadurch selbst zum Patienten wird, macht die ganze Sache keinen Sinn. Oder anders gesagt: Man sollte die Kuh, die man melken will, nicht schlachten. Ein unbegrenztes Risiko ist keinen europäischen Geberland zuzumuten. Das hat nichts mehr mit Solidarität zu tun.

The austerity measures are much too severe, how can Troika suggest that by 2020 Greece will reach 130% of GDP as being the result of 8 years of severe austerity.

Everyone forgets that there is already a clause in the existing agreement that states Countries should not exceed 3%GDP and it was Germany and I think Italy who were first to breach this undertaking. After 2 years Greece is ten times worse off than if it had been allowed an orderly default.

11m Greeks. Not more. Educated people of all ages leaving the country emigrating to Germany, France, Turkey. Old people staying. Billions of Euros paid by the EU to build up an infrastructure and industry. Billions of Euros left the country vanishing in Switzerland, Monaco. The Greek government buying weapons. To fight whom? First the money left the country, then its millionaires, now its elite...

This is a totally new situation in Europe. Just play a little bit: Imagine that all young people have left Greece, the old ones have died. Greece is empty but for some forelorn shepherds and Mr. Papademos .... What is Greece then? Who will be responsible for the debt? A country without people? I know this is exagerated. But this is the reason why in the long run we are either going to need a strong central European government US-style or a homogeneous economic situation in all European countries – or the EU is going to break apart. Like any other multicultural and multilingual entity in the past(Jugoslawia, UdSSR etc.)

You are correct. If Greece had simply had an orderly default 2 yrs ago, they would already be entering a reconstruction phase; however, when the Technocrat was installed as the Greeks' new Exec it was obvious that was not on the original agenda. Now, the banksters have figured out that they have one other alternative. The banksters have the upper hand and will be able to systematically siphon off any liquidity/revenue Greece can create. That was the second alternative for the Technocrat. Greece will enter a Structual Adjustment Program (SAP). Welcome to the third world; ie: economic colonization. Ask Africa or Latin America.

I do not think GR has been going down during last 150 years. That time, it was an ottoman postocolony. Only Lord Byron took bath there and Schliemann started to digg out the famous Troia. Wilhelms Germany has baught and transported the Pergamon altar to Berlin and austrian Hrozny started to digg in Boghazköi. No tourism. You see it through classical lyceum glasses. GR philosopbhy and literature was studied, or memmorised. Vice versa, all these times GR went upwards. This debate is a syndrom of EU studipity. Only in general EU solidarity, only in whole EU self subsidiarity is our perspective. At present, it is a pack of hyenas struggling for bones thrown away from the finance institutions.

Sorry, all these blathers are manipulation means, an instrument of chaotising human brains. Any society is as poor as poorest member. Good luck in this growing hell.

Hi Muddy! Klar, die Griechen werden ihre Kredite nicht mehr zurückzahlen. Das erledigen die anderen Europäer für Griechenland. Aber wo sparen die Griechen denn? Selbst wenn sie auf die Altschulden weder Tilgungen noch Zinsen zahlen, geben sie immer noch mehr aus als sie einnehmen. Die Geberländer finanzieren neben den Altschulden auch die Neuschulden. Und das überschreitet wohl die Grenze der Solidarität. Übrigens, Britannien ist fein heraus. Es beteiligt sich mit keinem Cent. Die Europäer sollen an Griechenland keine Bedingungen stellen und ihre Hilfszahlungen einstellen. Die Griechen müssten dann ihre Insolvenz erklären und eigenverantwortlich die Krise bewältigen. Sie könnten dann nicht mehr andere beschuldigen, sie würden in die griechische Souveränität eingreifen.

Welche Sparmaßnahmen? Griechenland konsumiert noch immer mehr als es selbst erwirtschaftet. Zu seinen Altschulden kommen Jahr für Jahr neue Schulden hinzu. Aus eigener Initiative hat Griechenland nichts unternommen, um die Ursachen der Krise zu beseitigen. Es kann von anderen Ländern nicht erwarten, dass deren Steuerzahler den griechischen Konsum ewig finanzieren. Die Troika will mit ihren Bedingungen nur sicherstellen, dass die gezahlten Hilfsgelder nicht in irgendwelchen dunklen Kanälen versickern. Das ist doch verständlich. Griechenland braucht keine Bedingungen zu erfüllen, es muss nur mit seinen eigenen Einnahmen auskommen. Die anderen Ländern sind schon damit geschädigt genug, die griechischen Altschulden zu übernehmen.

@aditec, so how do you expect Greece to repay its debts then? The austerity measures make it less likely since they destroy what is left of the Greek economy and plunge Greece into a deeper recession.

If Greece defaulted it wouldn't have to pay crippling interest. Outside the Euro a devalued drachma would help the ailing Greek economy for example cheaper holidays in Greece. I'm not saying this course of action is perfect. There would need to be support initally from the EU and IMF. But the alternative is hopeless.

#1 Nein, ich erwarte nicht, dass die Griechen ihre Schulden zurückzahlen. Die Griechen werden aber auch bei einem hundertprozentigen Schuldenerlass sofort wieder neue Kredite benötigen. Diese werden sie aber auf dem freien Markt nicht bekommen. Also verlangen sie die Kredite von ihren europäischen Partnern. Der Schuldenerlass entlastet zwar die Griechen, ändert aber nichts an den Ursachen ihrer Misere. Der Druck zu schmerzhaften, aber notwendigen Reformen entsteht nur dann, wenn Griechenland keine Hilfszahlungen mehr erhält. Dann werden die Griechen auch nicht mehr ihre europäischen Partner für zwingende Einsparungen verantwortlich machen können. Mit Hilfszahlungen werden die Griechen nur unwillig das tun, was die Partner von ihnen mit Nachdruck verlangen. Die anderen sind dann wieder die Sündenböcke.

#2 Mit eigener Währung können die Griechen auf die außenwirtschaftliche Situation flexibler reagieren. Aber die große Lösung für ihre Probleme wird das auch nicht bringen. Abwertung ist ein zweischneidiges Schwert. Sie verbilligt zwar für eine kurze Zeit die einheimischen Exportprodukte, verteuert gleichzeitig die Importe. Bedenke, dass Griechenland viele Produkte einführen muss: Energie, Maschinen, ja selbst Lebensmittel in großem Umfange. Dann kannst du dir vorstellen, wie schnell die Preise in Griechenland wieder hochgehen. Inflation ist die Folge. Und dann? Wieder Abwertung – ein ewiger Kreislauf. Der Wohlstand des Normalbürgers erhöht sich dadurch auch nicht. Außerdem muss Griechenland auch attraktive Produkte für den Auslandsmarkt anbieten. Produkte, die zwar billig sind, die aber niemand braucht, nützen nichts. Und bei Tourismus genügt nicht nur Sonne. Sonne haben auch andere Länder und kundenorientierter sowie preiswerter sind sie auch.

I think it's more complicated than that. Had Greece been in a position to apply the Argentinian recipe it would have. Unfortunately Greece is in the unprecedented position of not being able to pay its daily expenses, wages, bills of public institutions etc. Rarely in economic history have we seen such a failure and I must say I'm quite pessimistic.
