The recent accident of the Yemenia flight to the Comoros, which prompted questions about condition of the aircraft, "has alerted safety standards organisations in Europe and the rest of the world," reports ABC. According to the Madrid daily, the European Commission is preparing to reinforce controls on "dustbin" airlines. On 9 July, it called on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to institute an international ban on airlines blacklisted by Europe. "The European blacklist is very carefully maintained and based on standard procedures," explains a senior representative of the Commission, interviewed by the paper. "The blacklist is updated every six months and no airline has every appealed against a listing," points out Daniel Calleja, Director for Air Transport at the European Commission.
