In a press conference held on September 25, the Croatian government and the European Commission announced that they had reached agreement on Croatia’s unconditional application of the European arrest warrant. Faced with the threat of European sanctions if it continued to reject warrants for crimes committed before 2002, Zagreb has committed to vote on an amendment to Croatia’s constitution by January 1, 2014, reports Večernji list.

Prime Minister Zoran Milanović has called on opposition leader Tomislav Karamarko of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) to support the amendment, and warned that a refusal to vote in favour of the measure would be tantamount to protecting Josip Perković. Perković, a former Yugoslav secret service chief, is wanted by German police in connection with the 1983 assassination of a Croatian dissident in Bavaria.
