"The water carried away people, houses [and] cars" is how Lidové Noviny summarises the sudden and violent floods which hit the northern Czech Republic on August 7. Three months after causing 22 deaths in Poland and six victims in the Czech Republic, torrential rains once again swept through Central Europe.  A witness quoted by the newspaper spoke of "five feet of water" in "half a hour." "Precautionary measures should be taken before the onset of the floods," outraged the newspaper, criticizing the lack of anticipation by the Czech authorities.
