To Ethnos, 8 June 2012

“Black Dawn” – Athens daily To Ethnos grimly puns on Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn), the neo-Nazi party which entered parliament in the wake of the Greek elections of 6 May. On 7 June, one of the party’s MPs distinguished himself by assaulting two left-wing representatives during a live television debate.

To Vima reports on the incident which shocked the country –

The glasses of water that were thrown and the slaps that were meted out by Ilias Kasidiaris when he attacked SYRYZA representative Rena Dourou and communist Liana Kaneli were not only an offence to the two parliamentarians who were the victims of his intolerable behaviour. They are also an offence to every Greek who wants to see this country remain democratic and avoid becoming the battleground for civil war. The incident is not funny. This is how the abuse of power begins, and this may be the last straw for a population caught in the grip of the rage and despair that hold sway in Greece today. This incident was a slap in the face for democracy, and it requires an immediate response.
