God is demoted, again
“God did not create Universe,” headlines The Times. In his new book entitled The Grand Design, Britain’s most eminent scientist Stephen Hawking argues against the role of a creator for the Universe. The scientist explains – “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist”. The London daily points out that Hawking had once theorised that a complete theory of the universe would lead us to “the mind of God”. The 1992 observation of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun upset such notions. “That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions… far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings,” Hawking writes.
As Greece pimps its ancient monuments to bring in the tourists, lovers of cultural heritage are up in arms. But the country is only doing openly what the whole of Europe is: looting historic sites to drum up more ready cash.
Asserting national values is central to the political project of the Hungarian PM. Since the start of the year, fifteen paintings, specially commissioned for an exhibition in the Castle of Buda, have been putting this ambition on show.
The game has gone on for nearly two years: Athens pretends to comply with the demands of its creditors and partners, and they pretend to believe in Greece’s commitments. As the spectre of default comes nearer, however, the Greek bluff cannot go on much longer, writes an El Mundo editorialist.
