EU-Serbia: Eye test
14 January 2013
On the blackboard: "Kosovo"
The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton checks the eyesight of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, the leader of his party Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Ivica Dačić.
On the night of January 11 to 12, the Serbian Parliament adopted by a large majority a government resolution proposal setting out the basis for future negotiations with Kosovo. Belgrade has demand a level of autonomy for Kosovo's Serbs in the Albanian-majority state, thus implicitly recognising the authority of the Pristina government on the whole territory, formerly a Serbian province but which became independent in 2008. This also opens the door to an ethnic partition of Kosovo.
On January 17, talks between Dačić and his Kosovo counterpart Hashim Thaci must resume in Brussels, under Ashton's chairmanship.
