Geert Mak
Dutch journalist, writer and historian, Geert Mak (1946), was the editor of the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer from 1975 to 1985. He then worked for the NRC Handelsblad and was foreign correspondent for VPRO radio. Currently he dedicates his time to writing and published, among others, In Europe, in 2004 which was translated in fourteen languages and for which he received several prizes including the Leipzicher Buchpreis zur Europäischer Verständigung [City of Leipzig Literary Prize for European Understanding]. The book was turned into a television series in 2007 which was awarded the Europa Prize in 2009.
In this early 21st century, many commentators compare Europe to a gentle, grassing eating dinosaur. In order to adapt to the new world being forged, it must come out of its sloth, urges Dutch writer Geert Mak.
