Jan Cienski and Thomas Escritt
Born in South Africa in 1965, Jan Cienski is the Warsaw bureau chief of the Financial Times. He has been in Warsaw since 2003, where he has covered Poland’s entry into the European Union. He has previously worked in Uzbekistan, Moscow and Washington.
Thomas Escritt has been the Bucharest correspondent for the Financial Times since 2007. He entered journalism from the finance sector. He was educated at Cambridge University.
The Financial Times reports that the estimated 8m Roma in Europe have been particularly hard hit by the financial crisis. Already the most vulnerable economic group, this trend has not only increased their financial woes but also prompted hostility against them from various quarters.
