The unexpected victory of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili in Georgia’s parliamentary election on October 1st has attracted little attention in western Europe. This is a mistake, argues a Polish columnist, because the EU is thus turning its back on a country that is one of its staunchest supporters. 
Having moved to the West in search of better jobs, residents of the former GDR are now returning home to take advantage of an up-turn in the economy of Germany’s eastern states, which has come in the wake of years of sluggish growth. 
Twenty-one years after German reunification, many streets and squares of the former GDR are still named communist grandees. For a number of former dissidents and a journalist from Gazeta Wyborcza, it’s a puzzling phenomonen. 
At their February 7 meeting in Warsaw the Polish, German and French leaders agreed to bolster their trilateral cooperation. High time, writes Gazeta Wyborcza, to counter fears of a two-tier EU.
