Jarmo Virmavirta
Finnish journalist Jarmo Virmavirta (b. 1940) is a former director of the dailies Turun Sanomat (from 1983 to 1990), Uusi Suomi (1990-91), Länsi-Suomi (1994-1996) and the weekly Nykypäivä (1996-2001). He has lived in Tallinn since 2001, where he publishes a column in the Estonian daily Postimees. His opinion pieces are also regularly featured on the Finnish public radio station YLE.

With the adoption of the euro on 1st January, Estonia, now a member of NATO, the EU and the Eurozone, became the most "Western" of the Nordic countries. However, the country’s drive to join Europe has been marked by political reflexes reminiscent of the Soviet past that it would prefer to set aside.
