David Thesmar
David Thesmar (b. 1972) is a professor of finance at the HEC business school in Paris and a member of the French governmental Council for Economic Analysis. Along with Augustin Landier, he is the co-author of two books on the social impact of the finance industry: Le Grand Méchant Marché ("The Big Bad Market" published by Flammarion in 2007) and La société translucide, ("A Translucent Society" published by Fayard in 2010). He is also a regular contributor to the ideas pages of the French business and economics daily Les Echos.
Tensions between regions in Belgium and Italy, and the expulsion of the Roma from France have highlighted an underlying conflict in societies that wish to be both generous and socially diverse. According to two French economists, it is a tug-of-war that also has the potential to undermine the European Union.
