Alexis Papachelas is a Greek investigative journalist born in 1961. A former correspondant in the United States, he is the current Managing Editor of the Kathimerini daily and the Secretary-general of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy.

The uncertain outcome of the Italian elections and the success of Beppe Grillo have again demonstrated the undercurrents agitating Europe’s crisis-stricken countries. Will the EU, or even more crucially the markets, now make a gesture to break the vicious circle of crisis and citizens’ defiance? 
The winner of the June 17 elections, conservative Antonis Samaras could form a pro-memorandum coalition. For Athens daily Kathimerini there’s a future for Greece if political parties embody a quality they have been all too lacking in so far — responsibility. 
The elections of May 6 have shaken the Greek political landscape to its core and a majority capable of governing cannot be reached. Yet, notes Kathimerini, the politicians discredited by the electorate and their European partners are supposed to find the path to recovery.
