Solidarity – a movement supported by almost 10 million members in 1981, and with less than 600,000 members today – will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 “August Agreements” that led to the creation of the first independent labour representation in the Soviet-dominated bloc. The anniversary has sparked a heated debate in the Polish press.
The EU is plunging in the polls, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey. The ranks of the disillusioned are swelling not with Eurosceptics, but with Europhile integrationists. Meanwhile, the Commission marks time and Van Rompuy gone AWOL.
Eager to join the European Union, Montenegro is cleaning up its image of corruption and pulling out all the stops to attract foreign capital.
Komarno and Komarom are twin towns divided by the Danube and centuries of rancour between Slovaks and Hungarians. But this flashpoint of nationalist tension that spilled over into an international incident last year is not all what it seems...
Only two of the EU’s 115 ambassadors come from central Europe, all the rest come from Old Europe. As the "Foreign Affairs ministry" gets up and running, Poland warns that it will not tolerate the stitch-up.
Nicolas Sarkozy has put France squarely in Europe's extremist camp with his new hardline stance on security and immigration. But other countries have found far less confrontational answers to the same problems
The Swiss are about to reveal their future stance in their increasingly fraught relations with Brussels. One thing is sure, they are not about to join the anytime soon

The Commission proposal to introduce a European tax is an attractive one, especially for countries which are net contributors to the EU. However, De Volkskrant argues that it will have little chance of overcoming opposition from national governments, who are reluctant to surrender control in an area as delicate as taxation.
What the European Union is giving to Internet users and online privacy activists with one hand, it's taking away with the other, argues an American newspaper, reporting on a groundswell of opposition to increased surveillance of personal data.
To refill the public coffers and fulfil its international obligations, George Papandreou’s government is pulling out all the stops – and cracking down on Greek tax evaders.
In the wake of recent events which have seen French President declare war on “foreign born” delinquents and disturbing scenes of an eviction of African squatters near Paris, a writer in the Guardian argues that the Sarkozy adminstration has been characterised by increasingly widespread social disorder.
The European press is convinced that the definitive rift between the Italian leader and his main ally Gianfranco Fini announced on 29 July will herald a full-blown crisis in the system of power controlled by Il Cavaliere. Shaken by scandals and, according to Fini, the "moral question" they raise, his political movement is falling apart, while Italy’s influence in Europe, which was already weak, continues to wane.
With countries following their own national agendas, France and Germany vying for the top spot and major decisions being taken in informal meetings, divisions within the EU are deepening, argues Polish philosopher and European expert Marek Cichocki.
In the wake of a spate of violent incidents, the French president has announced his intention to attack “the problem of the behaviour of certain elements in the Rom and itinerant community,” recommending that foreign troublemakers be deported to their country of origin — a controversial policy in both France and Romania, which highlights the European dimension of this issue.
In one of his major speeches on Europe, the British prime minister made his strongest endorsement to date for Turkish accession to the EU. While the British press is in general well disposed, the continent, and even some elements of the Turkish press remain dubious about the impact of his declaration.
