The centre-right coalition have made history by holding onto power in this weekend's election, but what no one saw coming was the emergence of the 'angry white men' of Sweden's far-right as serious players
Solidarity – a movement supported by almost 10 million members in 1981, and with less than 600,000 members today – will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 “August Agreements” that led to the creation of the first independent labour representation in the Soviet-dominated bloc. The anniversary has sparked a heated debate in the Polish press.
To refill the public coffers and fulfil its international obligations, George Papandreou’s government is pulling out all the stops – and cracking down on Greek tax evaders.
In the wake of recent events which have seen French President declare war on “foreign born” delinquents and disturbing scenes of an eviction of African squatters near Paris, a writer in the Guardian argues that the Sarkozy adminstration has been characterised by increasingly widespread social disorder.
The European press is convinced that the definitive rift between the Italian leader and his main ally Gianfranco Fini announced on 29 July will herald a full-blown crisis in the system of power controlled by Il Cavaliere. Shaken by scandals and, according to Fini, the "moral question" they raise, his political movement is falling apart, while Italy’s influence in Europe, which was already weak, continues to wane.
In the wake of a spate of violent incidents, the French president has announced his intention to attack “the problem of the behaviour of certain elements in the Rom and itinerant community,” recommending that foreign troublemakers be deported to their country of origin — a controversial policy in both France and Romania, which highlights the European dimension of this issue.
