On 23 April 2010, the prime minister of the day George Papandreou appealed for international help to prevent Greece's collapse. But the three years that followed saw a series of blunders by the Troika and the Greek state, according to a series of economic analyses.
“The policy of austerity has reached its limits”, says European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, the first time Brussels has questioned its own policy. It’s time we grasped that one path for such varied countries doesn’t work, writes Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Discipline and budget cuts: The cure prescribed for the Eurozone no longer has unanimous support. Unfortunately, voters can not settle this debate as it is between unelected officials, foremost among them, is the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
The "Alternative for Germany" party, which will be officially launched on April 14, aims to take the federal republic out of the euro. Although its founders lack a well-defined roadmap, they could still bother Angela Merkel in September's general elections.
According to the ECB, the Germans did not take advantage of the crisis and are even poorer now than other Europeans. For the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, this is proof that they should not pay for the mistakes of others, and they need to better allocate their wealth.
