By imposing a tax on bank deposits in exchange for a €10bn bailout package, the eurozone leaders have, at best, set “a dangerous precedent”, and, at worst dabbled in “blackmail,” writes the European press.
The EU and IMF have agreed a €10bn bailout of Cypriot banks, but the price to provide rescue funds is a tax on all deposits. This condition has stunned the tiny Mediterranean nation, with the Cyprus Mail accusing the new President and other member states of betraying the island.
The latest statistics on the state of the eurozone economy indicate that, contrary to what political leaders have recently been saying, the crisis is far from over.
After the euphoria following the agreement on banking supervision that was finally reached between the 27 member states – the embryo of a banking union – the European press, given the details of the mechanism worked out in Brussels, has lost some enthusiasm.
In Goethe's most famous fable, Faust, the German author demonstrates his opinion that paper money is a continuation of alchemy by other means. This view, argues The Irish Times Berlin correspondent, is clearly evident in Germany’s current stance on the eurozone crisis.
After 14 hours of talks, EU finance ministers agreed a system of bank supervision. The project covers only a small number of firms, but it marks a step towards an end to the crisis, says the European press.
After a series of tough negotiations, the agreement on reducing the Greek debt reached by the Eurogroup and the IMF allows about €44 billion in aid to be released and gives Athens a little breathing room, but does little to help the country in the longer term.
What would happen if Germany left the euro? Economist Gustav Horn of the Hans-Böckler Foundation, which has close ties to trade unions, speculates on what would happen in the days following a German exit from the euro – and on what Germany's most popular euro-critic, Thilo Sarrazin, might also say.
