Electoral revolution in Dublin, paralysing strikes in Athens - Europe's most economically fragile member states are reacting differently to drastic austerity budgets and the EU/IMF bailout. But their fates are intertwined if they wish to emerge from the crisis and have a say in the running of the eurozone, writes an economist.
Whether it’s against austerity packages, pension reforms or nuclear waste shipments, protests have overrun the streets of Europe. Has democracy reached the end of the line? No, says futurist Matthias Horx, it’s time for the political establishment to come down off their high horse and accept real participatory democracy.
While millions are taking to the streets of France to protest against the Sarkozy government’s proposed raising of retirement age, England, once the scene of anti-Thatcher riots in the nineties is quiet as her heirs in the Cameron adminstration implement the severest cuts in living memory.
With the European Commission about to force members to rein in their budgets, a wave of protest against the cuts has erupted across Europe with a general strike in Spain and large demonstrations in Brussels, Greece, Italy, Ireland and Portugal.
