After two months of political crisis, the new Italian government led by Enrico Letta seems to be responding, at least in part, to calls for renewal of the country's political class. A few unknowns remain, starting with the alliance with Silvio Berlusconi, who is plagued by legal troubles.
The narrow victory of the centre-left coalition in elections on February 24 and 25 has left the country without a clear majority. The European press wonders about the implications of the vote and considers the consequences for Europe.
By bringing together the many Italians disillusioned by old-style politics, former comedian Beppe Grillo has robbed the coalition of the left, under Pier Luigi Bersani, of what was looking like certain victory. Italy will now have to reckon with a new player who is as indispensable as he is unpredictable.
As the most populated and wealthy region in the country, Lombardy will play a key role in determining the outcome of the Italian legislative elections scheduled for February 24 and 25. However, troubled by the lack of ethics among politicians, the region's all-important Catholic vote is more undecided than ever.
Just a few days ahead of the February 24 and 25 elections, the Italian media are ignoring the success of the former comic and self-declared populist. However, according to the polls, Grillo and Berlusconi could give rise to an unprecedented coalition of anti-Europeans.
Minor stumbles can lead to big falls in Germany. Ministers are tumbling like lemmings over scandals around plagiarised theses and invitations to travel abroad. What gets the Germans so worked up?
Mario Monti is not the only victim of the Cavaliere's return to politics. His Spanish counterpart is suffering from restive markets and once again has to cope with distrust of southern Europe. It's a risk – but an opportunity to seek support from his partners as well.
In his documentary "Girlfriend in a coma", the former editor of The Economist Bill Emmott analyses the reasons for Italy's insurmountable resistance to the necessary changes and reforms. An attitude it shares with many European countries, it partly explains why Silvio Berlusconi wants to get back in business.
Italy has long cursed Germany as a know-it-all, and yet respects it as the head of the class. With the arrival of the very proper Mr Monti this is changing, and Berlin will have to get used to some lessons from Rome.
