Estonia has an asset that enables it to avoid dependence on Russian gas: shale oil. In spite of the pollution it generates, the country has chosen to continue to use and develop this home-grown fuel source.
Natural gas deposits, exploited in the northern Netherlands, provide billions of euros to the Dutch state. But the extraction is the cause of an increasing number of earthquakes and this, combined with a lack of long-term investment, has made energy policy a focus of debate.
With Scotland set to vote on independence in 2014, future ownership of the UK's North Sea oil fields could see it becoming one of the world’s richest nations.
Thanks to a network of “moles” inside the company, this early retiree from Britain is posting on his website reports on shortcomings inside the world’s largest oil group. It’s a dogged pursuit that has already cost the Anglo-Dutch giant several billions.
The European Commission proposal to label oil produced from tar sands as highly polluting has been vetoed by London and The Hague. However, Trouw argues that it is not too late to defend the public interest.
Now that the EU has slapped unprecedented sanctions on Iranian oil imports in a bid to thwart its alleged nuclear weapons programme, what are the consequences? asks a Tel Aviv based political scientist.
With their decision to impose an embargo on Iranian oil and to freeze Iranian bank assets in Europe, EU member states are hoping to force Teheran to halt its nuclear program — an initiative which the European press believes is a risky bet.
The trial of the former premier resumes Sept. 27, three days after the visit of President Yanukovych to Russia. It’s a game of high strategy between Kiev and Moscow, in which Europe has a role to play too.
Many of the leaked US embassy cables reveal the close personal ties between Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconi. For Washington, suspicion is growing that Russia is using Italy as a Trojan horse to influence – by hook or by crook – Europe's energy policies.
To avoid natural gas shortages that have marked the past few winters, the EU is studying a mutual assistance plan for member states. But the trigger conditions won't satisfy everyone, and member states aren't ready to play the game, writes Rzeczspospolita.
A year ago the International Court of Justice (ICJ) confirmed Romania's sovereignty over part of the Black Sea continental shelf. Ever since the government in Bucharest has been dreaming of lucrative deals with major oil and gas companies, reports Adevărul.
The first round of the presidential elections on 17 January will see post-Communist Victor Yanukovych’s pro-Russian camp facing off against the pro-Western party led by incumbent president Victor Yushchenko and his prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Five years after the “Orange Revolution”, relations with Moscow, the country’s formidable neighbour and main gas supplier, still weigh heavily on electoral politics in the Ukraine.
After tensions triggered by the collapse of the Soviet Union and post-9/11, the hour has come for rapprochement between Europe and Russia. Favoured by the United States’ relative unconcern and the absence of major present-day flashpoints between the two powers, their reconciliation is being approached pragmatically – and in many areas on the Kremlin’s initiative.
Current or former heads of government, European commissioners, national energy company chiefs — in Brussels, the Russian energy giant has fielded a formidable team of lobbyists to defend its interests and projects, which are not always compatible with European initiatives.
Re-elected to the German chancellorship with a new coalition partner, Angela Merkel intends to steer a different political course in her second term of office. The economy, diplomacy, energy: Germany’s new tack could have far-reaching consequences for Europe.
Ankara is the neighbour Europeans still won’t let into their club. And yet the country behind the Bosporus is soon to become the communication hub for energy supplies bound for Europe. Die Zeit doubts the EU can go on snubbing the Turks indefinitely.
Royal Dutch Shell is the world's biggest company, according to Fortune rankings. It's also more ecological, more transparent, and safer, its new directors proclaim. At the end of June, the Dutch weekly Vrij Nederland published a lengthy investigation of the Anglo-Dutch oil giant. A big carbon footprint, oil spills, and serious shadowy areas persist. Excerpts follow.
