Press review: Markets deaf to Sarkozy-Merkel entreaties

The socialist candidate is set to become the next French president, but his refusal to reform would be bad for his country and most of all for Europe, argues the London weekly.
With France likely to vote in a socialist president critical of her fiscal pact, and a Dutch government collapsing on the issue of social reforms, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s austerity model is taking a battering.
For the European press, the first round of the French presidential election has one winner - Marine Le Pen of the far-right Front National - and two losers, the incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany.
On August 18, European markets plunged again, prompting the European press to report that this week's meeting between the “royal couple” or, more prosaically, of President Sarkozy and Chancellor Merkel, has not been sufficient to put the continent’s sluggish economy back on track.
