On issues such as burqa bans, same sex marriages and human rights, the Council of Europe is making its presence increasingly felt. But this hitherto inconspicuous organisation, frequently confused with the EU, has an image problem.
The arrest of an environmental activist who demanded money to withdraw his opposition to real estate projects has lifted the veil on a new type of blackmail, which writer Ivan Brezina maintains pales in comparison with the stock and trade of major public figures in the environmental movement.
In western Ireland, bloody feuding between rival drug gangs has instilled a climate of fear in the region. To deal with it, the government has drafted emergency legislation. But some judges and lawyers criticise the new laws as unconstitutional.
