Religion: The Islamisation myth
28 July 2009812 The Observer London
UNESCO’s recognition of Amsterdam’s 17th-century canal ring area fails to impress NRC Handelsblad, which argues that tourism and modernisation will not benefit from the city’s new status as a World Heritage Site — a title the newspaper believes is largely overblown.
In virtually every major European city, long-established locals and artists are fighting against the gentrification of their neighbourhoods. But the arty types are falling out of favour, observes the author Tanja Dückers. No longer hailed as the rebellious vanguard, they are actually bent on joining the establishment.
In the wake of the London and Madrid bombings, predictions proliferated in print and on web that Islam was entering a radicial and violent phase. Dire warnings of the imminent “Islamisation” of Europe have turned out, however, to be of little substance, reports the Observer.
