Incapable once again of taking a unified position on a matter of foreign policy, European countries are voting independently on UN non-member state observer status for the Palestinian Territories. Yet there was a time when Europeans claimed to have a key role to play in the peace process.
Left on the sidelines by the Arab Spring, the EU has not found its voice in the renewed conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It is as if the EU has given up on playing a role in a region that is in its own backyard.
In offering an alternative to the U.S. position on recognition of a Palestinian state, the EU is exposing itself to criticism and pressure from both the Palestinians and the Israelis.
After years of playing a secondary role in the Arab world, the EU now has an opportunity to exert a positive influence in a region where the United States and Russia have failed to respond to radical change. An Al-Hayat columnist outlines how Europe can make a difference.
The enthusiasm with which the Union for the Mediterranean was launched two years ago has been steadily waning ever since. The main reason why, says French political philosopher Sami Naïr, is the lack of a serious EU commitment to the region.
Even though it is supposed to be a privileged partner of the European Union, Israel regularly targets infrastructure paid for by the EU during its attacks on Palestinians.
So why is Europe not demanding compensation?
Thirty years ago, Europe advocated self-determination for the Palestinian people. In the aftermath of the Israeli army attack on the Gaza flotilla, two Israeli authors argue that it remains the only viable solution to the Middle East conflict.
The Israeli military's attack on Gaza Freedom flotilla, which resulted in at least nine deaths onboard the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara has prompted an outcry in Europe, where the press is calling for the EU and the international community to take Israel to task, and worrying about the consequences of an escalation of tensions between Israel and Turkey.
Following Catherine Ashton’s trip to Israel and Palestine, EU foreign ministers are gathered in Brussels on 22 March seeking to define union policy in the Middle East. According to the Financial Times, it should start by rethinking the question of aid to the Palestinian territories.
Israel has long taken part in the Eurovision song contest and in European football tournaments. And what if it became a member of the European Union? Unlikely, argues Sarfraz Manzoor, but a tantalising prospect for peace in the region.
