The financial crisis has exposed the deception and subterfuge of politics, yet the leaders of Europe continue to deny the obvious. Only honesty, and the courage to tell the truth, can save Europe.
For many economists, debt restructuring is the only possible outcome of the Greek crisis — an option that the European Central Bank has systematically refused to acknowledge. Médiapart argues that it would at least have the advantage of bringing much needed transparency to the banking sector.
Hamburg, at the epicentre of the food crisis brought on by the EHEC pathogen, has run up the epidemic flag: the blood supply is running out, and vegetables are rotting unsold. ‘We’re still alive,’ hisses the vendor in her market booth. A report.
In Tunis, a Volkskrant journalist witnessed the extraordinary spectacle of young Spanish indignados demonstrating outside their embassy. Their dialogue with passing Tunisians offers the basis for a reflection on our political system.
After helping to fuel the controversy, the European press is speculating on the public psychosis associated with the EHEC bacteria.
Forget the nation-state: Europe would be much better off if it were fundamentally reorganised – into powerful regions in the north and the Alps and picturesque bankrupts in the south
Illegal migration into Greece has slowed at the crossing near the Turkish city of Edirne since the Frontex mission, charged by the European Union to monitor its borders, deployed there for four months. But while this gap in the Schengen Zone may be partially plugged, the problem has simply been displaced. A report.
The victory of the Scottish nationalists in the May 5 elections has revived the debate over Scottish independence. But if the example of Catalonia and the Basque country is anything to go by, what looms on the horizon is a confederation of Europe, says El País.
Answers to the demands of the “Angry Ones”, who have been demonstrating against their lack of a future, cannot come from the Spanish government alone, according to Danish daily Politiken. It is up to Brussels, where the future of the European economy is decided, to find the solution.
On 22 May, the Spanish electorate severely reprimanded the ruling Socialist party at the local and regional elections, while throughout the country demonstrations and sit-ins are taking place calling for more political democracy. But perhaps the movement isn't structured enough to last.
In arguing that Greeks, Portuguese and Spanish shouldn’t have more holidays, Angela Merkel is not only spreading disinformation based on cultural stereotypes, but undermining the very foundations of the EU, argues a Portuguese columnist.
After passively submitting to the crisis, young Spaniards have finally taken to the street. Breaking out on the eve of municipal elections, the protests of recent days have been inspired by those in Iceland that led to the fall of the government in Reykjavik.
Widely practiced and encouraged by the authorities of the Rock, bunkering (ship refuelling), has caused extensive pollution in the Strait of Gibraltar. Calls from Madrid to respect EU rules are falling on deaf British ears.
Amid a virtual consensus that the current crisis has cast doubts over the future of the European Union, Polish columnist Jacek Pawlicki argues that the EU’s ability to adapt along with the contribution made by its more recent members will ensure its continued survival.
Unemployment, precariousness, an uncertain future: Spanish youth has been hit hard by the economic crisis. And that’s why they won’t revolt, writes El País.
The success of the True Finns party in the Finnish general elections is further proof that eurosceptics are making themselves increasingly heard on a European as well as a national scale.
After resisting for months and coming under pressure from the markets, the government of José Sócrates has resolved to seek help from Brussels and the IMF to avoid defaulting. About 75 billion euros of aid should be released before the elections on June 5. A decision too long in coming, says the European press.
