The planned high-speed train that was supposed to link Lisbon to Kiev will not be pulling away from the platform anytime soon. The crisis and the many obstacles on a route that promised to take travelers from the Atlantic to the Russian steppe mean that the European rail corridor has almost ground to halt.
A spectre is stalking the financial markets: what if the army of unemployed and poor no longer rubber-stamp the policies of the powerful? No wonder neither politicians nor business leaders want to risk too much democracy.
Every year, hundreds of residents are fleeing Venice, abandoning it to multinationals and art speculators and leaving behind a ghost town. Attempts to revive its economy are being hampered by a lack of state funds and the fatalism of those who have stayed behind.
In spite of the efforts made by NGOs and the distribution of EU funds, Europe’s main minority is no better off than it was 10 years ago. A lack of appropriate supervision in Brussels, the corruption of local leaders and the indifference of national governments are at the root of the problem.
Since the crisis began in 2008 at least fifty artisans and business owners have committed suicide in the region that was the engine of Italy’s economic miracle of the 1990s. Those who have been unable to adapt to new circumstances have seen the collapse of the model that built a prosperity they thought would never end.
On 29 March, EU finance ministers claimed to have come up with the right numbers with which to shield the eurozone from a new crisis. But it is a sleight-of-hand accounting that could crumble at the first sign of trouble.
In one of Europe’s poorest cities, thousands of children are leaving school to help their families make ends meet. Part of a trend that has been accentuated by the crisis, they find work in the black economy or they are recruited for sinister purposes by the mafia. (Extracts.)
The region around the city of Giugliano, a strong-hold of the Neapolitan mafia, provides nearly half of the counterfeit euros in circulation. The network, whose international ramifications could destabilise the single currency, has distributed over a billion euros worth of notes since 2002.
Scotland, like Catalonia or the self-proclaimed Padania in Italy, is now talking openly of its independence. For these regions the European ideal is a political argument, even if a place in the European Union would not necessarily be a good thing for them.
The European economy appears to have survived the worst of the crisis and to be on the road to recovery. However, progress towards this goal is is hampered by political hesitations and politicians doubts about their performance in future elections.
