Fraud in the organic farming sector has become a thriving international industry made up of a complex network of companies that bears all the marks of traditional organised crime.
The day after he started work, Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta went to Berlin, Paris and Brussels to pledge his commitment to Europe and voice his belief that austerity must be eased. But he may not be able to make himself heard, according to the European press.
After two months of political crisis, the new Italian government led by Enrico Letta seems to be responding, at least in part, to calls for renewal of the country's political class. A few unknowns remain, starting with the alliance with Silvio Berlusconi, who is plagued by legal troubles.
The stalemate over the election of the President of the Republic, which broke on April 20 with the re-election of Giorgio Napolitano and the resignation of the leadership of the Democratic Party, is the highwater mark of the crisis in the Italian political system. To save that system, we must move ahead immediately with reforms, starting with electoral reform.
Responding to political crisis, a chorus of voices, such as Italy's Five Star Movement, are calling for a transition to the direct participation that the Internet has made possible. However, the two systems should complement, rather than compete against each other.
The institutional and European democratic crises are pushing leaders towards tricky choices in terms of governability. Would it not perhaps be better to move toward new forms of participation that better match citizens' needs?
The comedian's Five star movement was the revelation of last Italian election. Its anti-establishment views and "digital democracy" methods are shared by many political movements across the EU, and they could form a common front at the European elections in 2014.
The big winner in the Italian elections, Beppe Grillo, is often described as populist. But in Europe, this political category is somewhat blurred, covering quite a cross-section of movements, argues a Belgian historian.
The uncertain outcome of the Italian elections and the success of Beppe Grillo have again demonstrated the undercurrents agitating Europe’s crisis-stricken countries. Will the EU, or even more crucially the markets, now make a gesture to break the vicious circle of crisis and citizens’ defiance?
