In a year’s time, the Republic of Cyprus will take over the rotating presidency of the EU. Between now and then, the Turkish Cypriots and the Turkish government want to obtain an agreement on the division of the island. If not they will suspend talks with Europe.
Initially ignored by Europe, the Mediterranean region was subsequently the focus of several integration projects, all of which failed to produce results. The current crisis, now striking its southern shores, is a testament to the need for a new approach.
Under the weight of an international embargo, the Turkish part of Cyprus is trying to develop its own economic resources. The latest initiative: building casinos to attract foreign tourists.
The Turkish residents of Northern Cyprus will go to the polls to elect a new president on Sunday. The future of their internationally ostracized republic, the most isolated in Europe, is at stake. A solution to the three-decade division between Greek southern Cyprus and the Turkish northern part of the island is nowhere in sight.
Berlin has been reunited for 20 years, but there is another wall in Europe which is still standing. While we celebrate the anniversary of the end of the Iron Curtain and the Cold War, one small corner of the European Union remains separated by a conflict that erupted 35 years ago: the Republic of Cyprus, which was been split in two since the Turkish invasion of 1974.
